Leeds

Leeds (via Bradford Interchange)

Winter mist
drifts in hollows
around
naked birches
Towns grown
around mills
backs of factories
stone houses
spread across
hillsides
A weir rushes
diagonally
Snaking roads
Daybreak
Bare branches
reflected
in icy water
its dark surface
sprinkled
with the last
of this year’s
leaves
Soft amber sunlight
on a garden fence
on a covering of
dry foliage
The deep green
of ivy swathing
hidden trunks
End terraces abut
dramatic cuttings
through looming
rock
Morning clarity
Broken windows
of dilapidated
warehouses
Subtle mosses
common ragwort
bold buddleias
all grow
undisturbed
on the fenced-off end
of an old stone
platform
Their spiritedness
strengthens me
inwardly
