Big Hats

Another divine getaway for the
men with big hats and tattooed smiles:
Wooing paper crowds with scripted
platitudes, they glide into side rooms
while junkyard innocents take the fall.
Atrocities cluster around those
with fewest defences, the least
left to lose and the most to offer.
The Big Hats gather ambivalently,
empty hearts and dreamless sleeps
producing status quo status reports
to be filed under meaningless titles.
The very essence of ignorance,
they reserve second helpings of bliss
for foreign mini-breaks, for afternoon
naps in leather armchairs.
