Heroning

This is a reckless belief.
Frankly I don’t know why I hold onto it;
but it seems to work.

Begin with a stretch:
Neck up, wings out, a quick two-step
toes barely leaving the water.

Warm-up over, the full-body
work begins. Ratchet those long wings to full
extension and flap like buggery.

Turn; legs into motion across
the water and, wing-beats continuing full pelt,
give it the old heave-ho!

Leave the grounded and aquatic
to their one-dimensional lives and rise,
preposterously, skyward.

This is a reckless belief.
Frankly I don’t know why I hold onto it;
but it seems to work.

Begin with stillness.
Body seated, eyes closed, whirling thoughts
slowly curbing their orbit.

Warm-up over, the full-mind
work begins. What sensations are occurring
in my legs, torso, arms, neck?

Notice: what profligate paths
has my brain taken me down now? Back to body,
the simplicity of breath.

Leave the flighty and fickle
to their one-dimensional lives and settle,
preposterously, grounded.
